ConTAD - Smart Container Tracking and Accident Detection

The ConTAD project is developing a tracking unit for sea freight containers. In collaboration with Jade University of Applied Sciences and Brehmer GmbH, Socratec is investigating how the tracking unit can be enabled to automatically detect container damage using condition detection. Similar to the principle of a smartwatch, which identifies activities based on movement patterns, sensors are used to detect the condition ‘container overboard’. In this state, the tracking unit warns ships in the vicinity about the damaged containers. In particular, the ship from which the container was lost can then take countermeasures to prevent the loss of further containers. Other ships can use the information to prevent collisions with the drifting containers.
